Sliding Doors

Sophie Elizabeth

10 years ago today, I landed at Heathrow having just quit my job and flown 12,000km home.

I'd been living and teaching in Jakarta - one of the best times of my life and I miss it every day - and loving life until I ended up in the hospital with Typhoid (100% would not recommend 😅).

Weeks passed by with feeling a bit better, then taking a dip again - I couldn't shake it, I didn't understand what the Doctors were saying and frankly I needed my Mum to look after me!

I called my boss one Sunday afternoon, regretfully quit my job, booked some very expensive last minute flights back to London and left my entire life behind.

It felt like the end of the world. It took months for me to find a job and be healthy enough to return to working fulltime.

It certainly didn't feel like it at the time, but what I've realised over the past decade is that I'm exactly where I need to be. If I hadn't come home unexpectedly, I probably wouldn't have ended up in my current job which has allowed me to train as a counsellor and now a coach, and explore those practices. I might not have moved to Exeter, bought my house, met some of my best friends, fallen in love with the SWCP.

Sometimes those things that feel like the end of the world turn out to be for the best.

If you're in the depths of the rough times, remember there is a light at the end of the tunnel. If you've made the big choices, ride the wave and stay positive.

And remember to get your vaccinations boosters!!!

What decisions have changed the course of your life?!
