Walk & Talk FAQs

Sophie Elizabeth

I've done a lot of outdoor work (Walk & Talk) recently so thought I'd answer the key questions I often get:

How does it work? We arrange a meeting place and time, and go for a walk during our session. Locations vary - I often visit Exeter Quay, Exmouth beach and occasionally venture out to Dartmoor or the South West Coast Path.

How far/fast do we walk? This all depends on the person and the session, but on average somewhere between 2.5-3.5miles/hour. This is meant to be therapeutic and worthwhile, rather than a strenuous workout! We will walk at the slowest person's pace and take breaks as necessary.

Can we take breaks? Absolutely! Some people prefer to walk for the whole hour, others prefer to walk to a secluded bench, for example, then walk back at the end. Whilst I refer to this as Walk & Talk work, perhaps a more appropriate title would be outdoor therapy and coaching - we don't necessarily have to walk. I try to plan around locations with benches, but the breaks do sometime include muddy/sandy bums!

What happens if it rains? We wear coats! If there is a weather warning in place, then we move the session online or rearrange...if it's just a bit wet (as it often is here in Devon!) the choice is up to the client - I am happy to wrap up warm and get on with it, but equally happy to have an online meeting if you'd rather stay cosy and dry.

What do I wear? Sturdy and appropriate footwear is a must, then clothing appropriate to the weather. I am happy to advise if getting outside is new to you and you're not sure what would be best. Normally some trainers/walking shoes, a pair of leggings/trackies/jeans, a warm top and waterproof are a good place to start.

What other questions do you have - have I missed anything?
