What is Counselling?

Sophie Elizabeth

Updated: Jan 14

The term Counselling will mean different things to different people, after all, we are all unique. It's a talking therapy; If I were to try and define it in general terms, I would say that counselling is a safe environment in which to explore how you feel, and try and make sense of what's going on in your head - at least that's what I try to offer my clients. There's been lots in the news over the past few years about CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) and long waiting lists on the NHS; I think it's important to know that there's so much more to counselling than referrals and limited sessions!

My clients have used counselling in the following ways:

- somewhere to have their honest thoughts heard, and not judged

- somewhere to explore their options before making a big decision

- somewhere to offload!

- somewhere to experiment with different coping strategies, or pracice/role play important conversations

- somewhere to explore their personality and what makes them them!

There really is no right or wrong. If you're in the Exeter area and interested in seeing if counselling is for you, you can email me at sophieelizabethcounselling@hotmail.com and we can book in a chat :)
