I remember when I was training to be a counsellor and our tutor told us that we couldn't see online counsellors (we had to go to personal therapy as part of our training) because they weren't as effective....then Covid happened and BOOM! Online therapists everywhere!
So does it work? Is online counselling as effective as face to face counselling?
This is something that I research and think about a lot, given that my practice is entirely online or outside these days.
Since the Covid pandemic there has been an abundance of research in to whether therapy and coaching are as effective online as they are in person and the general consensus is yes, though obviously this depends on the person.
Pros:
• Online work is generally more convenient and can be more flexible as we're not tied to a room booking slot
• Clients save money on travel and parking costs
• Counsellors can also keep the session cost a bit lower as there are less overhead costs to pay
• Working remotely also provides more opportunities to those that may be unable to travel for various reasons
Cons:
• The dreaded technological issues
• Clients need to have a safe & quiet space at home
In my experience the cons are outweighed by the flexibility and convenience of online work.
Have you tried online counselling/coaching? What did you think?
