CBT is a common therapy offering, especially on the NHS, and stands for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
Cognitive = everything that goes on in our head (memories, dreams, thoughts, mental images) and our thinking processes
Behaviour = everything that we do - what we say, how we act, how we solve problems etc - this can be both action, and inaction (choosing to do nothing)
Therapy = describes an approach to combatting a problem
CBT joins scientific and behavioural theories together to help people - it is based around how our thoughts, feelings and actions are all interlinked and so if we change one part, we can change others.
CBT is commonly used to help people experiencing anxiety, depression, PTSD and OCD, but can also help with more physical issues such as chronic pain or insomnia.
It is problem-oriented and focuses on working through a specific problem/thought process.
